Menulis Abstrak dalam Bahasa Inggris

PANDUAN DALAM MENULIS ABSTRAK BERBAHASA INGGRIS


Berdasarkan handbook yang diproduksi oleh American Psychological Association, abstrak didefinisikan sebagai berikut :
“A brief, comprehensive summary of the contents of the article…….need to be accurate….. self contained……. and concise and specific.”
Dari kalimat diatas dapat disimpulkan bahwa, dalam menulis abstrak perlu memerhatikan tiga hal, antara lain :

1. Akurat. Sebuah abstrak dapat mewakili tujuan dan isi dari artikel
2. Self Contained. Semua informasi yang terdapat dalam abstrak harus dapat dimengerti langsung oleh pembaca, dengan kata lain pembaca tidak perlu mencari arti dari penggalan kata, akronim, dan sebagainya dari sumber lain selain dari abstrak tersebut, artinya abstrak sudah harus bisa menjelaskan kalimat-kalimat yang ada dalam abstrak tersebut.
3. Singkat dan spesifik

Dibawah ini akan diuraikan fitur-fitur yang terdapat dalam abstrak :

1. Panjang kata yang terbatas
2. Kategori abstrak : Deskriptif / kualitatif, Informasional / kuantitatif
3. Kelengkapan isi abstrak : Pernyataan tentang masalah, Pernyataan tentang pendekatan untuk menyelesaikan masalah
4. Penjelasan singkat tentang hasil pembahasan
5. Struktur yang formal

LANGKAH-LANGKAH DALAM MEMBUAT ABSTRAK

1. Membuat underline, highlight dan semacamnya.
2. Membuat daftar hal-hal yang perlu diinput ke dalam abstrak dari keseluruhan abstrak
3. Merangkum beberapa bagian dari kalimat
4. Membuat gambaran umum dari abstrak
